1. Emerging Athlete Pathway

This program replaced the young athlete assistance program on 1 July 2015 and aims to foster the development of young athletes and support elite athlete pathways by providing financial assistance to help alleviate the costs associated with attending championship events.

This funding assists young athletes in Queensland who have competed or officiated at a state or state school championship, national or national school championship or international championship within the last 6 months.

Scope of financial assistance

  • Financial assistance of $200 for State & $400 for National events is available to assist with the cost of travel and accommodation for the eligible championship.
  • A list of the eligible championships, as nominated by Queensland School Sport is on the website.
  • Sport unit or the relevant state or national sporting organisation, is published under the 'eligibility' section on the website.
  • Athletes are only eligible to receive financial assistance once every two years from the start date of an eligible championship.
  • Lodging an application does not guarantee funding.
  • Applications will not be considered before the start of a championship. As the funding is provided retrospectively, applicants are required to use their own resources to travel to championships.
  • Athletes must travel more than 250km from their place of residence to the event location.

Application forms

For more information and details of how to apply, please visit the emerging athlete pathways page on the Queensland Government website or call 1300 656 191.

2. Local Sporting Champions Program

Local sporting champions: funding for junior athletes to pursue their sporting dreams.

Junior sportsmen and women find it difficult to meet the ongoing and significant costs associated with participation at sporting competitions, particularly sportsmen and women from regional areas.

The local sporting champions program is an Australian Government initiative designed to provide financial assistance for junior sportsmen and women towards the cost of travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment when competing at an official national sporting organisation (NSO) endorsed state or national sporting competition.

Further information and application forms are available on the Australian Sport Commission.

3. North West School Sport

North Western students selected in a state team to represent Queensland School Sport receive financial assistance from the NWSS.

NWSS will pay $200 per athlete to be put towards the compulsory costs associated with the team. Funding is provided on application to the Regional School Sports Officer.

For more information contact the Regional School Sport Officer.

4. Other funding sources

  • School parents and citizens association (P&C)
  • Rural and remote education access program (RREAP) funding
  • Local councils
