About us

Roles and responsibilities

The North West School Sport Board is responsible for organising and monitoring a program that promotes the development of sporting skills and abilities to a standard that will enable students to be selected in regional sporting teams capable of competing at a state level. An extended program is available for students to be selected from State Championships to compete at National Championships and Interstate Exchanges. Paralleling this is the incentive and encouragement for a skilled and professional group of teachers to demonstrate their abilities while working with highly motivated and talented students, and to be rewarded for their efforts by recognition of appointment to various levels of regional, state and national officialdom.

Location and characteristics

The North West School Sport region is unlike any other school sport region within the state. The structure, policies and operational practices for the region and in turn the districts is unique in the diversity it requires to meet the needs of the students and schools within its boundaries. The North West School Sport Region overlaps parts of two regions within the Education Queensland boundaries – Northern Region and Central Queensland Region. Geographically the North West Region covers schools, state and non-state with our boundaries extending to Mornington Island in the North, Birdsville in the West, Priarie in the East and Blackall in the South.

Address: 10357 Landsborough Highway, Longreach, Queensland, 4730

Districts

The North West School Sport Region is split into 4 sporting Districts – Gulf, Mid West, Central West and Mount Isa.

Schools

All state and non-state schools within the region are affiliated with North West School Sport. The region is comprised of 25 x state primary schools, 8 x non-state primary schools, 1 x special school, 2 x schools of Distance Education, 6 x P-12 Schools, 5 x P-10 schools, 3 x state high schools, 1 x non-state high school and 1 x non state P-9 school.

Students

The students who participate in North West School Sport activities at a district, regional or state level come from all sectors including students from primary, secondary, special schools and schools of distance education. The students range in age from 10 years to 19 years of age.

Programs

We have a variety of sports on offer to students within the region. Secondary students are offered a choice of 13 sports (22 teams) and primary students 13 sports (16 teams). The sports offered in the North West Region mirror the state program. Due to the small number of students in some sports, North West students are able to further their representative careers, in a number of sports, through participation in the Northern Region trial. Opportunities are also provided for students to participate in Presidents Teams.
